Program Overview

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps families living on low incomes pay their heating bills in the form of a cash grant. The cash grant is a one-time payment sent directly to the utility company/fuel provider to be credited on your bill. These grants range from $500 to $1,500 based on household size, income, and fuel type.

Remember: This is a grant and does not have to be repaid, and you don't need to have any unpaid heating bills in order to apply.

LIHEAP funds are disbursed through the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services.

Renters and homeowners in households with an annual income below the 150% Federal Poverty Level (FPL) are eligible to receive assistance. LIHEAP operates during the region's main heating season, between Nov. 1, 2022 and Apr. 28, 2023. You don’t have to be on public assistance or have any unpaid heating bills in order to be eligible.

Annual income cutoffs are listed below by household size.

For every additional person beyond 8, add $7,080.

You can apply online at COMPASS or request an application by calling the Statewide LIHEAP Hotline at 1-866-857-7095 or calling PA Relay at 711 for the hearing impaired. Applications are also available at your local County Assistance Office.

To apply, you will need a recent heating bill and the following info about all members of your household: name, dates of birth, social security number, and proof of income.
